What’s in a Will?

Many people don’t have a Will because they don’t feel they have anything to leave. However, leaving a Will is about much more than your possessions and your estate. Furthermore, you probably have more than you realise.

Without a Will your estate is subject to the rules of intestacy, which lay down how your property should be divided after your death, which relatives it goes to and how each portion of their inheritance is restricted.

Without a Will, you have absolutely no say in this process – which means your loved ones’ fortunes are left in the hands of the state. Unmarried partners receive nothing, and even married partners often have to sell your home.

By making a Will you ensure your loved ones are properly looked after, your children and grandchildren are left secure and, if you aren’t married to your partner, you can still ensure they receive their rightful share. You can also head off any traumatic family squabbles if you’ve made your wishes clearly known in a Will.

Here are some of the essential points and benefits of writing a Will:

  •  Specify whether you would prefer burial or cremation
  •  Ensure your partner retains their home
  • Provide for your family’s future
  • Distribute personal possessions
  • Avoid inheritance tax
  • Express your wishes about how your dependents should be cared for
  • Appoint executors and trustees of the Will – someone you can trust to carry out your wishes
  • Allocate gifts to friends and favourite charities
  • If you run a business, you can determine how it will continue without you

Making a Will is one of those things people find it hard to get around to – they’d rather put their head in the sand and forget about it.

We understand that at IFM. That’s why you need to write your Will with the help of a qualified, sensitive professional, who can guide you through the process and make sure you’ve covered every essential point.
